Pared-Back Beauty

There’s frost on the ground and garish Christmas decorations lining the shops of the high street; but my make-up bag still hasn’t got the memo about the days of BB creams, lipgloss and the liberal application of bronzer being behind us. Here’s an inappropriately summery run-down of all the products I’ve been loving recently.

I don’t mean to tempt fate, but my skin has been looking uncharacteristically lovely recently; something I attribute, almost in full, to THIS product. With good skin comes little need for heavy base products, so the IT Cosmetics YOUR SKIN BUT BETTER CC CREAM has been serving me well as a light base with excellent coverage. For particularly late nights, NARS’ RADIANT CREAMY CONCEALER makes an appearance to mask the more stubborn of dark circles but for the most part, the CC cream gets the job done. I’m pairing my base with THIS primer, from DR. BRANDT which I still can’t get enough of; the smoothing effects are second to none. To amp up the glow, Chanel’s LE BLANC DE CHANEL comes out to hand occasionally, giving my complexion a shot of radiance with none of the chalky cast.

I’m not ready to part with bronzers and blushers just yet, although as the days wear on it’s getting harder and harder to convince people it’s a leftover post-Greece glow and not all-out fakery. But for the most believable bronze, Benefit’s HOOLA has a finish that lies somewhere between matte and satin and Max Factor's Creme Puff blush in LOVELY PINK strikes the perfect balance between coral and pink and compliments the bronze beautifully.  To keep the look fresh, I use NARS’ LIGHT REFLECTING PRESSED POWDER with the IT Cosmetics HEAVENLY LUXE WAND BALL POWDER BRUSH all over my face.

Since my eyes were opened up (both literally and figuratively) to the world eyelash extensions, I’ve been eschewing mascara all together- although, Illamasqua’s MASQUARA and MAC’s GIGABLACK EXTENDED PLAY were two frontrunners before my lash extension revelation. My salon, AMARYLLIS NATURAL BEAUTY, has the whole fluttery, natural thing down pat, so all they need is a little comb through and they’re good to go. Sometimes, I’ll add a little bit of whatever dark brown eyeliner / kohl hybrid comes to hand first if I’m feeling like glamming up the look a little bit. Eyeshadow-wise, I’m a sucker for swipe-on, blend-in, go kind of formats, so bareMineral’s 5-IN-1 BB CREAM NATURAL EYESHADOW in Soft Linen ticks all the right boxes for me. The terracotta tones aren’t totally seasonally appropriate now that the days of greys, glitters, plums and the smokey eye loom on the horizon, but I’m happy with the warmth and subtlety of the look. My eyebrows are also usually left to their own devices after being tinted and threaded, but sometimes the magical capabilities of Glossier’s BOY BROW in Brown are too much to resist. Full, Delevingne-esque brows in a tube.

Lips-wise, I’ve been fighting all of my natural urges to plump for uber-glossy formulas and nudes (including my current favourite, Charlotte Tilbury’s VALENTINE- read more HERE) and switch to berry and burgundy tones. But since my eyes are left quite bare and natural, I think it’s nice to wear more of a statement colour on the lips. To compromise, I’ve put the nudes to bed and opted for a more vampy, but still moisturising lip product, which is the Kiehl’s BUTTERSTICK LIP TINT SPF 25 in Touch of Berry. I’m still reaping the benefit’s of Nuxe’s rich REVE DE MIEL lipbalm, but this lip tint eases the whole Winter/ dry lips debacle and stays in place all day.

And there you have it! I’ve been meaning to cobble together a post featuring all of my recent favourites for a while now, so I hope you enjoyed hearing about everything I’ve been slathering on in the morning and you can spot a couple of updates in amongst some old favourites. I’m back to Uni now and third years means I’m juggling a multitude of assignments, but I’m still posting regularly on my INSTAGRAM, which you can follow for more updates. Keep your eyes peeled for a Christmas beauty gift guide, which will (spoiler alert) almost definitely include the new Diptyque candle pictured above, which smells like vanilla, pine trees and spices. And please send me links in the comments below for any posts you’ve written about interior design or Winter skincare switch-ups!
